There are several other dopamine agonists that lower serum prolactin levels and reduce tumour size to a similar extent to bromocriptine. These drugs include pergolide, lisuride, CV 205-502 (mesulergine), and cabergoline. These compounds are associated with a similar side effect profile to that observed with bromocriptine. Cabergoline has the advantage that it only needs to be taken once per week. With the exception of bromocriptine, safety during pregnancy has not been demonstrated. Bromocriptine may also be given now as a monthly depot intramuscular injection (50 or 100mg per dose), but this formulation is not available in all countries.
